If you’ve ever noticed a dull, powdery residue on your boat’s hull, you’ve encountered 'chalkiness' —a common issue for boat owners, especially those who have fiberglass or gel-coated finishes. While chalking is a natural result of weathering, UV exposure, and oxidation, it doesn’t have to be permanent.
With the right care and products, the crew at Sea Spray can restore your boat’s shine and protect it from further damage.
What Causes Chalkiness on Boats?
Chalkiness, often called "oxidation," occurs when the gel coat or paint on your boat reacts to prolonged exposure to sunlight, saltwater, and air. Over time, UV rays break down the protective resins in the gel coat, causing it to lose its glossy appearance and become dry, brittle, and dull. As the oxidation process continues, the surface begins to powder, creating that white, chalky residue.
Why Does It Matter?
Chalky boats not only look neglected but are also vulnerable to further damage. If left untreated, oxidation can lead to more severe deterioration, including cracking, fading, and peeling of the gel coat. Additionally, the porous surface of oxidized fiberglass can absorb dirt and water, making the boat harder to clean and maintain in the future.
How to Fix Chalkiness on Your Boat
The good news is that chalky boats can be rejuvenated with a little elbow grease and the right approach. Here’s a step-by-step guide to restore your boat’s shine, should you want to maintain it yourself:
Before tackling chalkiness, ensure your boat is clean. It's important to remove dirt, salt, and debris so that you’re not rubbing contaminants into the surface while polishing. Pre Dulon is our recommendation for this step. Pre-Dulon is designed to be used before applying Dulon Polish or other Dulon products to a boat or other marine surfaces. Its primary purpose is to remove contaminants, such as dirt, grease, wax, and oils, that can interfere with the polishing or waxing process. By using Pre-Dulon as a preparatory cleaner, you ensure that the surface is thoroughly clean and free of residues, allowing the polishing or protective products to adhere more effectively and perform at their best.
Once your boat is clean, the next step is to address the chalky oxidation. Dulon Poly Polish is an excellent product for removing oxidation and restoring your boat’s luster. The unique formula contains fine abrasives that gently work through the oxidized surface, eliminating the powdery chalkiness and bringing back a glossy finish. Apply a small amount of the polish to a clean microfiber cloth or a soft polishing pad, and work in small sections.
After applying Dulon Poly Polish, work it into the surface using a circular motion. If you're using a dual-action polisher, apply the polish at a low to medium speed for the best results. Continue polishing until the surface starts to shine and the polish begins to haze, indicating that the oxidation has been removed.
Once the Dulon Poly Polish has hazed, use a clean microfiber cloth to buff away the residue. You should see an immediate difference—a smooth, glossy finish free of chalkiness. The polishing action will also smooth out minor scratches and imperfections, further enhancing the overall look.
To prevent chalkiness from recurring, make regular cleaning and waxing part of your boat maintenance routine. Wash your boat after each outing, especially if you’ve been in saltwater, and apply Dulon Marine every couple of months. This will protect the gel coat and keep it looking shiny and fresh.
